Great perspective on alumni interest versus institution. Reading between the lines of the commentary, there are concerns about alumni having ulterior motives or plans that go against the institution's plan. It turns into a power or ego grab where some alumni group feel entitled to dictate the direction of the university. Instead, alumni groups need to rethink their intentions and work towards supporting the university's plans. And if the university's plan does not align with the alumni group, then do not support that plan. Overall, the argument is to align or rethink what your role with the university and plan will be. Or you will be left out of the plans.

There should be a multiple choice quiz given to alumni about a university’s needs. The scores would reveal a lot. Many alumni see the finish line, but grossly underestimate the resources required to get there and overestimate their ability to help reach it. This would help keep things in perspective…
