Good point about donations and what may be the maturity of HBCU fundraising and donor ship (if that is a word). Nowadays, the small donations will not get a mention (something mentioned by you and the panel during a previous HBCU After Dark. I know there will be people who think they should get preferential treatment for these types of donations. Unfortunately, those days are over as someone with a 6- or higher digit donation will make a bigger impact and get more attention from the school and students. It is okay to make small donations, but do not expect to be chilling in the VIP suite.

Interestingly, I was talking with a HBCU about a partnership to help build their students’ work portfolio and potential revenue flow. From the discussion, I got a sense that they only wanted the money for what they perceived as a current need rather than build a long term relationship. During the discussion, an administrator mentioned that if I dropped $1 million dollar, I can have my name on anything I want. It was hilarious, but a vibe that money talks and I would have a more attentive audience with a larger donation. This is no different than with politicians or even the community in which big donations get fanfare.

My question is whether the same rule applies if donations that are smaller go towards sports programs or other school projects that do not get the big fanfare?
