Great piece, President Artis. Your analogy of an airport for explaining the essence of what HBCUs do was excellent. I do hope that the 1 billion dollars of the federal stimulus package are distributed based on objective and quantifiable metrics. Smaller, less well-known, airports were impacted far worse than others. Cheers to you, the other pilots, as well as your respective teams around the nation.

A very solid piece. And, kudos to Dr Clark for realizing we don’t have time to wait for the political climate to change and moving accordingly. Lawd’ knows if I had the resources I would replace a lot of these outdated “air traffic controllers”, but we have to work with what we got. Peace.

Great op-ed, Dr. Artis! The airport analogy is a great way of explaining organizational structure and institutional inequity for undergrads in a digestible way... I'll be incorporating this into the syllabus for my course "The Black Experience in American Higher Ed" in future semesters.
